Chapter 1

The nightmare had begun. I had just received my Performance Management System (PMS) score from the Hateful Boss (HB) when I started the first draft of this book. Not that he had told me the actual score, as he never did that. Instead, he had given me a full lecture on why my main responsibility as a manager was not so much about production or reaching certain targets but more about analysis of trends and appropriately advising the executive based on the results of the analysis.
This was a complete shift of goalposts because the numbers showed that my sections had met, and in most cases, surpassed the key performance areas (KPAs) that had been given to me at the beginning of the financial year. We never went through the KPAs one by one, as one would expect during a performance appraisal. Instead, he always sorts of lectured me on a completely different topic, catching me off guard each time and completely changing the goalposts…….
